Spelling BeeHive

The Camp I Am Spelling BeeHive™ is a literacy-focused programme that gives children a fun, engaging platform to develop their language skills, build confidence and discover the power of words.

Through spelling, reading, creative writing, storytelling, debate and public speaking, learners are encouraged to explore language beyond the classroom and find their own voice. The programme combines learning with competition, creativity and self-expression, creating opportunities for children to challenge themselves, celebrate their progress and learn from one another.

The journey begins at school level, where learners take part in internal spelling bees before progressing to the Spelling BeeHive™ Semi-Finals and, ultimately, the Finale. Along the way, learners engage with words from the CAPS curriculum while developing skills that extend beyond spelling, including communication, critical thinking, confidence and stage presence.

At its heart, the Spelling BeeHive™ is about more than getting words right. It is about giving young people the confidence to speak, express themselves, take on challenges and realise what they are capable of.

About the 2026 Camp I Am Spelling BeeHive™

Not all BeeHives are the same. 🐝

The 2026 Camp I Am Spelling BeeHive™ is a four-competition literacy programme designed for Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners, taking literacy beyond memorising and spelling words.

This year, learners will engage with 1,200 CAPS-aligned vocabulary terms, developing their ability to spell, define and apply words in context while building skills in creative writing, drama, storytelling, public speaking and debate.

The programme features four distinct competitions:

  • 🐝 Spelling Bee — a financial literacy challenge that puts learners’ spelling skills to the test.
  • ✍🏾 Flex in Context — a creative writing competition where learners demonstrate their ability to use words meaningfully and creatively.
  • 🎭 Show and Tell It! — a drama and storytelling competition that brings words and ideas to life on stage.
  • 🎤 Eloquent Elocution — a debate competition that challenges learners to articulate and defend their ideas in front of a live audience.

More than a spelling competition, the Spelling BeeHive™ creates a space where learners can think critically, communicate confidently, express themselves creatively and find their voice.

Through four different ways of engaging with language, the programme celebrates the many ways literacy can come alive — because not all BeeHives are the same.

Four competitions. One programme. One stage.
