Brief Recap of 2011

Camp I Am held three holiday camps in 2011 during April, July and October.  Our sites were in Diepsloot and Orange Farm and more than 1,000 children participated.

Our 2011 camp year ended with a special camp on Climate Change in October, in Orange Farm.  The highlight was a model United Nations style debate on Climate Change, which was featured as an insert on SABC Morning Live on 13th October.  We had debating teams from seven schools- Aha Thuto, Leshata, Masibambane, Mpheti Mahlasi,  Raphela, Skumbuzo, and Thamsanqa. They represented UN member states, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Nigeria, Russia and the USA.

The winning team was chosen by a panel of judges: Shaka Sisulu (Cheese Kids), Ayesha Wharton (Trinidad and Tobago High Commission), Linda Gould (Education Africa), Lesley Masibi (SABC TV Program ‘Leader for a Day’ ) and Renata Stuurman (Actress).  The team won a trip, sponsored by Education Africa, to Cape Town to participate in the South African Model United Nations (SAMUN) Debate.  They debated on Climate Change with the winning provincial Model UN teams and three international teams. Over 500 schools participate in provincial SAMUN conferences annually.
